Why Do Our Children Need An Education Anyway?

by Matthew Smith

We have been told year after year that an education is important. Is it really? Do you know why? At our math comic strips web site we deal with this question quite a bit. In this article we will be focusing on why it’s important for our children to get a good education.

Knowledge is power, or so the saying goes. When you graduate from school, whether it be elementary, middle, high, college, or university, you are giving yourself power over your future. You have many more options in regards to what type of job you can hold, where you can live, and what $$$ you can make. Some jobs do provide “on the job” training, but most employers won’t even consider your application if you don’t have the minimum educational requirements.

With a well-rounded education you become more resourceful. Nobody knows everything about everything, but a well-rounded education equips you with principles that you will be able to apply to any situation. This is important because you will be able to succeed in situations that you have never faced before. For example, suppose asks you what time it is. You might not have your own personal watch handy, but if there is a clock on the wall, you could tell them what time it is. Why is this? You have been educated to tell time in the past, so you know basically how to do it no matter where you are. You don’t need to have your own personal watch…you can use the clock on the wall. An extremely simple example, yes, but you get the point…

A well-rounded education also provides you with a greater quality of life. When the economy starts to turn sour, many people get laid off. It’s often those who lack in education or skills who get laid off first. Worse still, since they have less education, they will have a harder time finding a new position.

When you have a good education you often have greater understanding. Let’s illustrate with an example. Suppose you are going to the Middle East…Egypt to be more specific. Now you may have never been to Egypt before, but by studying up on the pyramids, the Nile, and Cairo, you will have a much deeper understanding of the history, culture and people of this country before you even arrive.

“Birds of a feather flock together”, or so the saying goes. Have you ever heard the term “networking”, in a social setting that is? It basically means meeting people to serve a common goal. Networking often goes hand-in-hand with a good education, as it means you will be able to “flock” with other “birds” who share your goals and ideals. Who knows what jobs might come out of these encounters?

A well-rounded education makes you a more fun person to be around. No matter what topic someone happens to bring up at the dinner table, you will be able to intelligently jump in and offer your “2 cents worth”. Suppose you meet someone at a party who tells you they are from a small country in the pacific. Suppose you reply that you have read a bit about his country of Fiji, and can offer some details on the climate and economy. Won’t that be a great way to make a new friend?

In conclusion, these are just a few reasons why we think education is important. On our math comic strips web site we focus primarily on teaching math skills to children via comic books. If you are interested in learning more about this fascinating subject, please visit us on our web site.
