It seems that when you become pregnant, the whole world becomes a baby gender predictor. Everyone, it seems, has an opinion or a favorite trick to guess whether you’re having a baby boy or girl. Some people even lay odds on your baby’s sex and win jackpots!

You’ve probably heard of the different old wives tales about how you carry the baby, whether your belly is high or low will be a clue as to the baby’s sex. Performing an ultrasound is nearly painless and takes only a short time. Depending on the stage of gestation, the most annoying part is probably going to be having to drink what feels like bladder busting amounts of water prior to the examination. For example, whether the baby is facing out and the size or age of the fetus can affect the usefulness of the sonogram to predict sex.

Medical testing is the only way at this time to accurately determine a baby’s sex before the birth event. However, medical testing procedures such as amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling carry a risk of harm to a fetus and because of this high risk, using them as a baby gender predictor is not a viable option.

These days, it’s not uncommon for expectant parents to want to learn the sex of their baby beforehand. With busy lives and exciting, yet unknown changes, anything that can make the anticipation of a new baby’s arrival a little easier is often a welcome relief.
